There is a famous story told in Chassidic literature that addresses this very question. The Master teaches the student that God created everything in the world to be appreciated, since everything is here to teach us a lesson.

One clever student asks “What lesson can we learn from atheists? Why did God create them?”

The Master responds “God created atheists to teach us the most important lesson of them all — the lesson of true compassion. You see, when an atheist performs and act of charity, visits someone who is sick, helps someone in need, and cares for the world, he is not doing so because of some religious teaching. He does not believe that god commanded him to perform this act. In fact, he does not believe in God at all, so his acts are based on an inner sense of morality. And look at the kindness he can bestow upon others simply because he feels it to be right.”

“This means,” the Master continued “that when someone reaches out to you for help, you should never say ‘I pray that God will help you.’ Instead for the moment, you should become an atheist, imagine that there is no God who can help, and say ‘I will help you.’”

Okay so I’ve been watching The Avengers way too much lately, like you do. And I love the scene where Tony is poking Bruce and Cap is being…Cap. So as I’m watching it I am like ‘Where the hell does Tony get the blueberries from?’ So I watch again and I see it! The tall black cylinder case thing that says ‘Stark Industries’. Totally Tony’s snacks. Cause you know he was like ‘Fuck SHEILD. They’re not gonna have good snacks.’ And then right next to it in the next frame is a big wardrobe case. You can see a Tony shoe and some random clothes like his suit jacket and red shirt. This asshole brought snacks and a freaking wardrobe. I love him.

When something (like a book) ends with the main character becoming a king or something, why is there ALWAYS a timeskip between that and the beginning of the next one?

I think it would be pretty interesting to read about them getting adjusted to that sort of situation… even if it’s only a page or…

There’s actually this manga I’ve read where they do end the story showing the girl getting adjusted to life as a princess as the final chapter and it was pretty cool because it was different.

I think maybe people don’t really do it because it seems like a “slice of life situation” when people usually write pretty plot driven stuff nowadays.

Yeah, probably… I sort of meant more, stuff where there’s a sequel after it. Like, one book ends with that moment, and the next book starts with “This character has been the [insert title] for 2-7 years, and now here’s the next thing!” (not in those words, but yeah). One of the series in question, it kind of made sense, because those years would have been mostly “adorable main character goes around acting adorable and everyone loves him,” which is so not what that series is about, and it would have been completely out of place. But the most recent one… like, barely anything “happened” like that in the first 2/3 of the book, it was mostly just the main character getting adjusted to a situation that was, to him as he was before it, pretty much the same as going from him as he was after everything to being king. But I guess the author had a reason for it…

Also, conflict could end up being more complex if it starts up right after the character’s been shoved into this position of the proverbial great power and great responsibility, and they haven’t exactly mastered how a leader should react to the new conflict that pops up. That would be interesting!

(Also wouldn’t work with either of those series because both feature the throne as a reward for something, and there are multiple rulers in each, so an usurper wouldn’t have to get rid of that character in order to rule… but anyway…)

I think I might know what manga that was… was it the older, better thing by the author of a popular series? Shoujo manga often has those little epilogue chapters… sometimes they’re nice like that.

…I remember one, though, where it’s like years after the end, and the main couple has been married for a while, and all of the other parents at the preschool are fangirling over how ridiculously adorable their kid is, and then the main characters show up and the other parents start fangirling over them because they’re celebrities now. Yeah.

Lol the manga I’m talking about is called Kilala Princess or something like that? It’s a manga about a girl going through a journey with all the Disney Princesses. It’s actually not too bad. Though there’s no sequel. The manga you mentioned with the celeb parents though…thats a lil cray haha.

But yah your idea of adjusting to conflict as a new royal is indeed interesting. I’m trying to think if I have read anything like that. If I think of something I’ll hit you up :D Cuz I’m sure there’s gotta be something (aside from the Disney one I mentioned)

I’ve actually had a few ideas for stories that were sort of like that… character being brought in and told they needed to rule some group. Their reaction is usually like Simba after Nala finds him in the second half of The Lion King… “I can’t do it, I don’t want to, find someone else,” and then they end up realizing they need to and accepting it… yeah…
